Shhhh! Have we got a dirty little secret for you!
Lets talk safety and wood for a minute!
Many of us love the idea of a story behind our floors, such as it coming from a Century old barn. But as fascinating and exciting as that is, is it really safe?
But first what does Reclaimed Wood even mean?
Reclaimed wood is any wood used for building or for furniture that's already served a purpose in a previous life. That means it comes from a wide variety of places, each with its own unique history!
So lets talk about the dirty little secret no one talks about!
Many of the reclaimed wood comes from century-old barns that have fallen into disrepair. Growing up in farm country in Northern Ontario we can personally attest to the fact the back 50 years ago, even to this day many farmers used/use Diesel and motor oil to slow the process of wood decay. From adhesives to insecticides to lead, reclaimed wood provides a safe harbor to all sorts of things you can't see with the naked eye. And it's not just chemicals that should concern you, It’s animal feces. These animal feces contain a chemical called Ammonia that’s been absorbed into the wood.... So if the animal smell isn't there, chances are they've been killed off with insecticides which isn't much better.
But don't worry you can still get your reclaimed floor! Our reclaimed floors are 80+ years old and material that is still old wood so it gives the exact same appearance, but is safe for you, your family and your pets!
No fear to let you children play on our floors because our wood is kiln dried, heat treated and thoroughly inspected prior to production to ensure a top quality product. Here at Northern Stable Supply we only supply the best for our customers!
